Free is a very alluring word. On my way out of the grocery store a few days ago, I discovered just how powerful this word really is. I saw three carts that were full to the brim with VHS tapes. Signs on each cart said in big, bold letters: "Free! Limit 2 per household."
Wow, I thought. This is my lucky day. I was going to score some free goods--goods that were so popular, the store had limited how many of them people could grab. The satisfying feeling of being in the right place at the right time to get a cool deal washed over me.
As I got closer, I realized what was inside the carts: Pokemon tapes. Scores and scores of Pokemon tapes. I turned away, but the word free echoed in my mind and I nearly went back to claim what could rightfully be mine. Surely these tapes could be useful!
And then I came to my senses and left the store.

Why, oh why, didn't you pick them up? I was really hoping to turn Madeline into an anime prodigy.
I would have wanted to go get some too. Very good restraining yourself from something so useless. I wonder how long they'd been there!
You should have grabbed them.
They're great for decorating a friends yard with endless video tape.
Also good for white elephant parties. I love it when someone gets something and they say "I don't want this". Well, duh!!!
I was really into Pokemon in 2000. Even went to see the movie "Pokemon 2000" with my brother. The show is FUNNY.
As a hostess gift for you Japanese exchange student? Reminds me of when our sisters were the first to have Pikachu shirts in the US, funny stuff that would never be popular here . . . hahaha.
Your post is well written:). I also think you needed the Pokemon tapes for white elephant gifts--we have an impressive collection of DVDs that really need to be gifted away... Can you explain "Flib?"
Oh, my boys would have been in absolute HEAVEN! I would have had a fight on my hands getting them to do the limit 2 thing.
Man, all these ideas.
Tara, "Flib" comes from high school. My friends used to call me "Gibby" a lot, and since nothing rhymes with Gibby, one of my friends ending up calling me "Flibby" one day. It caught on and I was often called Flibby or Flib for short.
ha! self control is so hard when something free is dangling in front of you. well done.
